Is the Black Plague slowly making a comeback that could wipe out millions in Africa? The heath companies are trying to make a change and are trying to break this new plague down and find out what’s going on in Africa. This matters to us because this plague is said to be WORSE than the “Black Death” or it is said to be just as close to the black death so one of the names for it is the “New Black Death”

“Treatment with antibiotics may cause drug resistance making it ‘far, far scarier’. Scores of doctors and nurses have been struck down by the deadly disease. Some 2,034 have been infected so far in the worst outbreak in 50 years” Madagascar’s healthcare

For the spreading of the plague in Madagascar the amount of people infected is 1,947 in the country off the coast of Africa/Madagascar, and now 143 dead of this disease. However the symptoms for this plague are a little bit different, such as fever and swollen lymph nodes.

This plague has become so big due to lack of medical attention in Africa, the medicine is lacking and it is difficult because there are so few Doctors between cities and small villages to help those who become  infected. Madagascar’s healthcare system will be unable to cope if the plague outbreak continues.

The World Health Organization has become involved and has begun a rapid course of preventative measures along with the proper inoculations to stop the spread into other countries. They have discovered that the disease is spread by small rodents and their feces to humans and that it is spread by humans with just simple contact with each other.

Some background information on The Black Death:

The Black death arrived in Europe by sea in October 1347 when 12 Genoese trading ships docked at the Sicilian port of Messina. When families went to greet their other family members getting back from the black sea they often contracted the disease. What they don’t know was that since they kept a lot of the dead on the boats the illness spread. The infected were covered in mysterious black boils that oozed blood and pus and gave their illness, Over the years, the mysterious Black Death would kill more than 20 million people in Europe.

“The extent of the contagious power of the Black Death has been almost mystifying. The central explanation lies within characteristic features of medieval society in a dynamic phase. This dramatic fall in Europe’s  population became a lasting and characteristic feature of late medieval society, as subsequent plague epidemics swept away all tendencies of population growth.” –Black death history

This Pneumonic Plague if not stopped quickly can become as deadly as the Plagues from the Middle Ages and that is why it matters to us in the United States the Black Plague wiped out millions in our past and if we don’t cure it again history will repeat itself.
