Ukraine Ships Attacked by Russian Vessels
December 15, 2018
In the past few years tensions have been especially high between Ukraine and Russia, however recently things have escalated once again. Russia opened fired upon two Ukranian gunboats and a tugboat, then later special forces detained twenty-four Ukrainian sailors (BBC). This is the first time in the past few years Ukraine and Russia, have had an open conflict. Even though the Ukrainian military has been fighting Russian backed separatists, and volunteers since 2014.
Relations between the nations had continued to be severely strained when Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula, in 2014 (The Guardian). The nation of Ukraine gained independence, from Russia after the collapse of the soviet union in 1991. During this time many nations were eager to leave Russia behind and possible join NATO, but Russia’s hands seem to be to tightly wrapped. Ukraine leans towards a western ideology, this is something Russia views as a threat. Especially since Russia has seemed to be going after their old allies, in the Soviet Union possibly wanting to bring back, to the union. Over ten thousand people have died in the conflict thus far.
The situation in Ukraine has gotten to the point that the discussion of martial law is happening, to determine if it would be the best option to keep things together, for the time being. Both sides blame each other for the situation, in New York, the UN Security Council met to speak on the incident, however, were not able to come to a solution due to sharp disagreements between Moscow, and the West. Economic sanctions have been tried in the past to slow Russia down, but it has done little to stop their campaign. Others have commented on the event such as NATO said it “fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity, including its navigational rights in its territorial waters”. A spokeswoman added the following “We call on Russia to ensure unhindered access to Ukrainian ports in the Azov Sea, in accordance with international law”. (Independent)
It is unknown how the event will fully transpire, due to Ukraine calling it a violation especially with the recent blocking of the Kerch Strait, and Russia saying the Ukrainian ships were entering territory illegally. (AP) The conflict has seemed to be going on nonstop for the past four years, and with two superpowers being the Americans and Russians, many wonder if this will be the next Cold War.
