In 277 counties across 24 states, Zombie Deer have been infected with a specific prion illness called Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This disease causes brain function to significantly decrease. Prion pathogens are a rare misfolded protein that affects the brain and its functions and can happen to both animals and humans.

According to the Center for Disease Control, “ …there are no treatments or vaccines… These studies raise concerns that there may also be a risk to people.”

Sightings have been in states surrounding Ohio and there have been unconfirmed cases of CWD in Ohio. Many are wary that this disease could be spread to humans which raises some obvious concerns. So far the CDC has concluded that this disease is transmitted from bodily fluids. CWD also takes an extremely long time to show symptoms and long term studies need to be conducted on primates and other animals to see if the paranoia is warranted.

The disease was first discovered in 1960 in a Colorado lab by studying a captured deer. It soon became apparent in wild deer around 1981. In the 1990s the cases have spread to include multiple states. After 2000 the area of confirmed sightings has increased to 24 states.

After CWD takes hold in an area it stays for a long time finding suitable hosts and destroying wildlife. Wildlife is being eviscerated by CDW and the search for a cure is ongoing.
