Two school districts in Ohio have trained a team of teachers and staff to fight against an active shooter threat using firearms. The debate on arming teachers started after the fatal 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 students and 6 educators dead. Action was officially taken following the 2018 shooting in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, that left 17 dead and 14 wounded. (CNN)( NBC)

The white house also supports this measure. Government officials vowed to help give teachers rigorous firearms training and endorsed a bill to tighten the federal background checks system. So far, only Sydney City Schools and Mad River Local School District, have trained a confidential team of staff members to fire back at an active shooter and have guns on the actual school sites. Both districts have guns hidden in safes throughout their schools.

The responses to arm teachers have varied. According to Sidney Police Chief William Balling, after speaking to FOX News, he is not entirely against it but can not support it completely because he fears it’ll make it difficult for Law Enforcement to do their job: “…you take away a possibility of one or two people with guns to six or seven people with guns without us having assurance who’s the good guy or the bad guy,” Balling said. He fears that if everyone has a gun then Law Enforcement Officers could get the wrong person and turn the scene bloody. ( FoxNews)

According to a recent NPR poll 59% of Americans oppose to teaching educators to carry guns. They believe it will only give them more to worry about, having a weapon be in the same room as their child. Other parents claim to just let Law Enforcement protect the law and teachers teach. According to Lori Hedberg, who is head of the Sidney Teachers’ Union and has been with the district for 29 years, believes weapons should never be in the hands of a teacher;“I don’t want a teacher to ever shoot a gun. That is not part of your job description”.
