With a late start to the school year and events vastly rolling around the corner, this leaves limited time and loads of stress for the Seniors and even Juniors to get their college applications submitted. These students are starting to take the first step of starting their post high school life which can be overwhelming, pressuring and sometimes pretty demanding. However, not all hope is lost with the number of helpful resources provided for the students’ use.
These resources include the Common Application which walks students through the application process and keeps them on track and makes sure they don’t leave anything out or forget a step. Another resource is the school counselors, which are there to help students with an issue or question they might have about what to pursue or where to go and even just the process of it all.
“Using the Common app for my application process has been extremely helpful,” said senior Lily McAlister. “I felt incredibly overwhelmed at first but once I sat down and really started looking into it, I started to feel more at ease because it definitely simplified the process a little bit for me.”
Some people find it easier to meet one on one with someone who can really walk them through the whole process, help them find their true calling and even help them pick the best school environment for their lifestyle. Thomas Worthington has their school counselors for a number of reasons but one of them is to help students through this stressful, overwhelming process. Students are able to schedule a time with them during the day to meet and discuss the next steps of applying to colleges and universities post high school.
“I have about 100 seniors and i’d say so far maybe like 25 have reached out to me whether it be just a quick question via email or setting up an appointment to come in and chat about the process of applying or even just doing college research about where they want to attend.” said school counselor Kelly Swearingen.
Even when the Common app gets confusing, the counselors are able to assist you when trying to complete the process. There’s a lot to cover in that app which can be so overwhelming and sometimes it’s good to be able to sit down and have someone help to walk you through it all.
“This year we switched from Naviance to Common app so the process is a little different so what I did was I made a checklist for my seniors which I think has helped tremendously because when I meet with students for 10-15 minutes and they’ll leave with all that information still feeling lost,” said Swearingen. “I print it out for them and walk them through it and then they can take it with them and obviously email me with any follow up questions.”
Although the process can be overwhelming and pressuring, there are a lot of helpful resources at the students disposal to make it all a lot easier on them. You can look up the Common App to get started on that process and/or email your counselor and schedule a time to meet with them to have them help you.
