The Aviary, the TWHS school store, is run by 21 students in the EBA program and is separate from school sales. The Aviary’s customers are strictly TWHS students. Temporarily located in the cafeteria this year, products in the Aviary consist of snacks such as Rice Krispy treats, gum, frappuccinos, Little Bites muffins, chips, drinks like Gatorade and sweet tea, and TWHS merch.
TWHS has had a school store for at least 20 years now but got it’s name in 2012 from a student, Skylar Chill(TWHS‘13). Student Ava Stotzer(senior) works during 3rd period at the Aviary.
“Since my freshman year at TWHS, the Aviary has acquired various new options to sell to students,” Stotzer says.
The Aviary is actively working on new items to sell and hopes to sell more apparel in years to come. With the new school, more accessible location, and new products the Aviary should be getting more steady business.
Mr. Jason Savage is the EBA teacher who supervises the Aviary business.
“Next year in the new school, the new location will be right by the student commons and will be upgraded to a walk-in store,” says Savage.
With the construction this year, the Aviary has moved locations. Previously, it was centered in the main hallway which made it pretty open and accessible to all students. Upperclassmen are affected the most by the new location this year due to having open lunch, meaning they go home for lunch and never need to go to the lunchroom.
“I ended up going to the Aviary a lot more last year because I’d pass by it three to four times a day”, says Cooper Florence, a junior at TWHS.
This year the Aviary is located in the old building which is a farther walk from the new school. Many students may find that they don’t have any classes in the old building so they never come across it anymore. Sydney Knape, a senior at TWHS is one out of many students that don’t have classes in the old building.
“I don’t have any classes in the old building, so it’s unnecessary for me to walk all the way to The Aviary”, said Knape.
On the other hand, Mr. Savage brought up the fact that it made up for it being right off the cafeteria. This year the Aviary found itself in the lunchroom area which brings in lots of students during 3rd, 4th, 5th periods, all of which are lunch periods.
Although the Aviary is undergoing many changes now, with the help of Mr. Savage, EBA program, and new school construction the Aviary will become more accessible to all students, feature new snacks and merch, and will continue to be a student-friendly environment for all.
