From buying chocolates, to having a nice dinner, to just relaxing and watching a movie together, Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many different ways. February 14th is coming, and many people will celebrate, including lots of our Thomas Worthington students. With the convenient day off, students will have even more time to make special plans and spend time with their significant other or friends. So what do Thomas Worthington students plan to do on their day off?
While Valentine’s Day is commonly a European tradition, it’s celebrated all over the world. In South America, it’s celebrated by doing kind things for your loved ones. In Asia, people express their love for each other by giving gifts, especially chocolate. In European countries, it’s similar to the way we celebrate in America, but each country has its specific and unique traditions. In America, Valentine’s Day is nowhere near a new tradition, with it becoming a national holiday all the way back in 1849!
While Valentine’s Day is traditionally a holiday celebrated by partners, it can also be celebrated with friends and family. In recent years, it’s become more and more common to share with friends, some people even choosing to celebrate “Galentine’s Day” the day before Valentine’s Day. One of these people is sophomore Caroline Go. Caroline says that she and her friends are “just going to hang out, and everyone’s bringing a dessert.” She continued to talk about more of the activities that she was planning on doing, and finished off by saying, “It’s going to be fun to spend quality time with my friends”.
However, others like Lily McAlister and Alli Hopper have other plans. Lily, a senior, is “going to Kitchen Social for dinner, and…making a Valentine’s Day treat” with her boyfriend. Her and her boyfriend are also going to exchange gifts and just have a more “relaxing Valentine’s Day” this year. Alli’s plans with her boyfriend are slightly different, and she’s celebrating both Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day. Alli, a junior, says that her and her boyfriend are “going to Bob Evans for breakfast on Valentine’s Day because [she] has a game Friday night”. Tonight, however, she’s having a sleepover with her friends for Galentine’s.
All of these fun plans go to show that whether you have a significant other or not, Valentine’s Day can still be a fun day and an amazing occasion to celebrate. Make best use of your day off, and have an amazing Valentine’s Day (and four day weekend)!
