Every spring at highschools nationwide, the senior class eagerly anticipates a unique and spirited tradition called “Senior Tag”. This student-organized game has become a hallmark of the senior year experience, offering a blend of strategy, major competiton, and excitement as students prepare for graduation.
Senior Tag at TWHS involves teams of seniors who engage in a friendly competition where the objective is to eliminate members of opposing teams by tagging them with water guns. Each team typically consists of six players, and participation requires an entry fee of $10 per person. The collected fees contribute to a prize pool, which is awarded to the winning team at the end of the tournament.
Senior Tag at Thomas Worthington High School follows specific rules to keep the game fun and safe for everyone. School grounds, workplaces, and sporting events are off-limits, and players can’t enter another’s home unless a family member invites them in. If any sort of school staff or police interaction occurs during the game, the team will be disquailifed from the tournament. The game progresses weekly in a bracket format, with ties settled at the end of the week. Sundays are set aside for referees to update brackets and handle tie-breakers.
While many students view Senior Tag as a highlight of their final year, reactions are mixed. Some seniors find the constant need for an eye out to avoid being tagged stressful, exhausting and dramaful. Others appreciate the exciting opportunity for fun and bonding with classmates.
Underclassmen often watch the game unfold with anticipation, looking forward to their chance to participate in the future. However, school officials caution students to prioritize safety. Principals from all over advise seniors to be careful and stay safe, emphasizing the importance of not jeopardizing one’s future over the game.
Despite varying opinions, Senior Tag remains a cherished tradition at TWHS, symbolizing the transition from high school to the next chapter in students’ lives. It fosters a sense of unity and provides a memorable experience that many alumni look back on with fond memories.
