On Saturday, April 26, the lacrosse fields of Worthington Ohio, will come alive as Thomas Worthington High School and Worthington Kilbourne High School face off in one of the most anticipated games of the season. This rivalry is rich in tradition and community pride, and promises to deliver an unforgettable display of athleticism and school spirit.
The rivalry between TWHS and WKHS is one of the biggest in central Ohio. Since both schools belong to the Worthington City School District, the competition goes beyond just lacrosse. It shows up in all other sports and school events. Being so nearby adds to the pride and excitement for both players and fans. Their yearly lacrosse matchup is a major spring event, bringing out big crowds and a high energy atmosphere.
When asked how the big rivalry game is viewed, TWHS Junior Goalie, Dominic Parini stated, “There is definitely an added layer to the competitive intensity and you can tell that everyone wants it more than usual.”
TWHS lacrosse is known for being one of the first LAX programs in Ohio. “There is a sense of pride that goes into our program,” says Junior Attacker, Trey Beegle.
The TWHS Cardinals led by Coach Matt Erdlitz, have established themselves as a very hardworking team this season. Although many challenges have been phased, they hope to turn the season around and continue to put their best foot forward.
“We aren’t a bad team, we just can’t put together a full game and we continue to make the same mistakes. I am optimistic for the rest of the season and believe we can turn it around, says Parini. “The defense is all very close and has good chemistry with one another. The offense is slowly building that chemistry up.”
On the other hand, the WKHS Wolves enter this season with a renewed sense of purpose. After facing challenges in previous years, the team has shown significant improvement, with a roster filled with talented and determined players. Under the guidance of experienced head coach, Brian Miller, the Wolves are eager to showcase their growth and compete at a high level.
“We are very confident with how we are performing right now, and we hope to continue to win,” says Penn State commit, Preston Hawkins. “We are a very hard working, gritty, tight knitted and a respectful team.”
WKHS Junior Midfielder, Tate Rich describes the team dynamic as a brotherhood. “We really click as a team on the field. Most of us have been playing together since elementary school and we have tons of fun playing with each other,” says Rich.
Both teams are known for their fast paced and physical style of play. Fans can expect a high energy match from start to finish. The stands will be packed with students, alumni and families, all showing their school spirit with loud cheers and lots of energy.
