Thomas Worthington Cardinals were matched up against their biggest rivals, Worthington Kilbourne on August 30th at the Kilbourne Stadium. This match was arguably in the Card’s favor considering they’ve been undefeated against Kilbourne the past 3 years. Unfortunately, with the mix of bad play decisions and Kilbourne’s lockdown defense, TWHS couldn’t catch a break for most of the game.
TWHS students at the game didn’t understand what was going on. The students have gotten used to having a solid football team these past few years, but things have just seemed to change this year.
“Having to cheer when the team can’t catch a ball is infuriating,” said Landyn Sterling, a TWHS cheerleader.“The football team would make a bad play so we would cheer to make the crowd stay in the game. [The team] got mad at us for some reason and blamed the loss on us.”
Last year they fell to TWHS 28-9 and 38-0 the year before. Jaden Williams, a senior player, had some perspective on the loss after the fact.
“Us being such a young team and no older leaders, makes it difficult to work as a team,” said Williams. “Since the game, we have already noticed a difference in maturity and skill. It was a big growth moment for sure.”
Although this loss wasn’t the desired outcome, the season is far from over. There have only been three games this season, giving hope for the Cards to turn this season into a win.
The Cardinals will next play Kilbourne on the basketball court. The hope is to beat them on the court if not on the turf. Will the cards rebound? We’ll have to wait and find out.
