Students interview veterans in TWHS library 11/09/15

Monday, November 9, 2015 Thomas Worthington celebrated the annual Veterans Day celebration. A little over twenty veterans attended  with a wide variety of representation from each armed force.  This day is set aside for the Veterans to share stories with the students about their experiences serving our country. The day began with a breakfast for the Veterans, where student volunteers have the opportunity to have one on one conversations with the Veterans to get to know them on a more personal level.  After breakfast, the main part of the celebration starts.

Usually the veterans are very open and willing to share their personal experiences.  Students really enjoyed the stories that the veteran had to share and said that each story were very detailed and very interesting.  Veterans Day committee member Dexter Annor was most interested by the stories of veteran, Vince Vitullo. Vitullo shared that every time he sees a young girl in a dress, he thinks of the suicide bombers who would hide bombs under their skirts during the time he fought in the army.  This is only one of the many interesting stories shared throughout the event.

Regarding the event as a whole,  Dexter thought the event went very well. There was a great turnout, and the veterans were happy.  His only complaint was the fire alarm going off during the during the day, interrupting the program. As a conclusion of the day, both the band and the choir programs prepared patriotic musical selections to share with the Veterans, honoring them for unselfishly putting their lives on the line for our country.  One veteran even stood up and yelled “Encore!”  This celebration has been a tradition at the school for many years and is just a small way to show our appreciation to the people who have risked so much for our country.
