After a disappointing season last year, the Thomas Worthington Ice Hockey team has undergone a complete transformation. A team that finished with only five wins a year ago has already matched that total of wins at the beginning of the new season. They started the year undefeated through the preseason and have now opened conference play 4–0. The team’s momentum began right away with 2 statement wins over cross-town rival WKHS, dominating 6–2 and 4-1 to set the tone for what has become a breakout year. Sitting at 8–0 overall, Thomas looks like a completely different team, faster and far more confident than in previous years.
Last season was often frustrating for their players, but those struggles became motivation. Countless things have changed since then, both on and off the ice. 4 Four-year player and senior forward Will Gams explained one of the biggest changes in the team’s performance. “The biggest difference from last year compared to this season is we have a better defense, and we have a pretty competitive three lines,” Gams said. That depth and stronger defensive play have allowed Thomas to control games more effectively and avoid those challenges that cost them wins in the past.
As soon as last season ended, players committed to making sure this year looked different. Seniors like Will Gams and Eli Hall took their offseason training seriously and focused on developing areas of their game that needed improvement. “ I got into really good shape and worked on my shot,” Gams said. Eli added, “During the offseason, I lifted a lot and skated.” Eli and his brother, Rhett Hall, were huge additions to the team over the offseason, helping the team get over humps that they had faced in previous years. The work paid off this year’s teams are quicker, stronger, and better conditioned, which has shown in their dominant wins.
With their first tournament of the season approaching, excitement is building throughout the team. Many players are looking forward not just to the competition but to the experiences that come with traveling together. “I am most excited for the Kent State trip during winter break,” Will Gams said. “And hanging out with the guys and team dinners.” The bond within the team has strengthened, and that chemistry has translated directly into their success on the ice.
Thomas has already equaled last year’s win total, and the season is barely underway. The offseason work, improved depth, and renewed culture have helped elevate the program into one of the strongest teams in the area. If this start is any indication, Thomas Worthington hockey is on track for a season to remember.
