Many people budget while others believe in just living life to the fullest, without a budget and or even looking at their spending.
A common stereotype for high school students is the trait of being so called “broke”. Thomas Worthington High School Student Maddie Miettinen does keep a budget but admits that it is hard to save money, she claims majority of her trouble with saving is that when she sees something that she likes she cannot fight the temptation to buy it, she tries to limit it by putting more money into her savings but eventually she ends up taking it back out. Along with another senior, Liz Rohrbacher who budgets her money but also thinks budgeting money is hard because everything is so expensive. “I do keep a budget but I think it is hard to save money, when I see something I like, I buy it and then I see something I like again and then I also buy it, and I also just keep buying things. I’ve tried to limit this by putting more money into my savings but I eventually take it right back out.” states Miettinen. Liz Rohrbacher states “Budgeting is helpful but it is hard when everything is so expensive”.
Budgeting may be difficult for some, but many people are aware that in the long run it is beneficial. Students follow the basic rule of taking out 20% of your paycheck and putting it directly into a savings account, and for some it’s even as broad as every time you get paid put a little away from every paycheck. A senior at Thomas Worthington, Izzy Hoyt says that you should save over 50% of your paycheck automatically because you cannot spend money that you don’t have. “Financial advice I would give to others is to save automatically and save over 50% of your paycheck so it automatically comes out because you can’t miss what you don’t have.” states Hoyt.
While young adults are still learning the basics of budgeting and many of them believe that it is hard, what is said to be a very common form of advice is start budgeting and save your money as soon as you get the chance. A substitute teacher Mrs. Star says that for anybody, start by tracking your expenses so that you are aware of what you really need to spend money on, and once you get that you need to put things aside so that you know what you have to do. “The first thing you need to do after you know what you need to spend money is then put things aside that you plan to save or give, or put your bills away so you know what your disposable income can be, after you do the things that you have to do like save or pay rent.” states star.
There are many different ways people handle budgeting in general but based on common opinions, people believe that budgeting may not be the easiest task, but for financial needs it is a necessity.
