Senior tag is a long standing tradition led by students at the end of each school year. The game gives students a competitive and fun way to end their high school years and a way for seniors to meet people they otherwise may not have talked to. In the game students must “tag’ their opponents by spraying their watergun while avoiding getting tagged. Encouraging strategies and creativity and creates lasting memories leading towards graduation.
Every year there are appointed referees but most notably this year was Nathaniel Bates. Nate has the job of enforcing the rules, making the brackets, and ensuring fair play often leading to controversy. Nate stated
“When we had to get someone out on a technical traffic violation when landyn measured an opponent’s car over 12 inches from the curb,” Bates said.
With over 20 teams competing for over $2500 in prize money, disputes and accusations of foul play are not uncommon. “when one team got one or two people out someone from the opposing team asked to talk about it saying they were safe but later going back on what they said resulting in an elimination which was later voted against by the refs.” Nate also explained
Beyond the rulings and disagreements, Senior tag also builds a strong sense of community among seniors. For many it is one of the highlights of the year along with other senior events like senior sunrise and senior campout, but for some seniors the game felt unfair and felt like a “popularity contest” “They were very arbitrary, it doesn’t make sense why some teams got by weeks and the amount of by weeks were way too many, I think that the refs were too focused on putting the “popular teams” together leaving some people upset.” stated by seniors who wish to stay anonymous.
