After months of construction and anticipation, the new competition gym is finally open. Built to host major athletic events, the new facility features new seats, walls, and a polished court that sets the stage for a new era for Thomas Worthington sports. However, many students say the new gym hasn’t lived up to their expectations. The transition has not been completely smooth, with both Boys and Girls volleyball seasons being disrupted .
“It affected our volleyball season simply due to the construction. Missed part of our senior season in our home gym because of it and had to play at Kilbourne and in the aux,” said Hope Adams, senior volleyball player.
Other sports have also shared their frustration with the gym. Senior basketball player Carter Wall has concerns about the safety of the players.
“A lot of people are going to get hurt from the bleachers this season in practice because it’s really close to the hoops”, said Wall.
Even with a few early challenges, not everyone sees the new gym in a negative light. Some believe it’s already making a difference.
“The new gym moves us closer to having some of the best facilities in the area. I love the Bluetooth music system, and after years of not having AC in the old gym, I’m looking forward to having a temperature-controlled gym,” said Brian Lawless, Boys Volleyball head coach.
The new competition gym has sparked both enthusiasm and criticism, but its opening marks a new chapter for Thomas Worthington sports — one built on change, teamwork, and the promise of bigger things to come.
“I like how bright the new gym is and how the space feels new, fresh and representative of our school,” said Lawless.
