Film club here at TWHS is an organization that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. It is, at its heart, a very simple club; a place where movie fans at TWHS can come together to talk with their classmates. Compared to organizations like Ski Club and Competitive Cooking, that can seem somewhat tame. However, for those in the group, that doesn’t matter.
Senior Gerald (Jerry) Verhoff is one of the leading officers of film club this year.
“Usually someone like myself starts the meeting off with a question,” Verhoff said. “Usually it kind of relates to the time of year. Like right now for example I might ask everyone if there’s any holiday movies that they’ve seen lately. From there we just kind of talk. We don´t really have any prompts or things we stick to, it’s really just a casual discussion about movies that we like or have seen.”
The club, which runs from 3:30-4:30 every Thursday, has already seen some identity changes throughout its short lifespan.
“I believe [the club] started a couple of years ago as an A24 club, as opposed to film club,” Verhoff recalled. “Over the years it sort of shifted towards a more general film club. Mr. Duffy has been advising it the whole time”.
A24 is a popular film studio that was the foundation of the club upon its inception. Over the years, the organization has branched out in more ways than just changing its name.
“Last year, we organized a meetup, and we all went to see the Minecraft movie when it came out…” Verhoff said. “And that was a lot of fun. The theater was crazy, but it was a lot of fun. We had a really good time.”
Film club has already grown a lot over the past few years but Verhoff believes that the group still has much more room to grow.
“Being able to continue the tradition of film club and pass it on to future classes..,” reflects Verhoff, “That’s what I want the most.”
