With concerns about Fortnite’s popularity and daily player numbers dropping, many longtime players are stepping away from the game. Epic Games’ battle royale, once one of the most played games in the world, is seeing engagement decline, and some analysts say it is at an all-time low, according to Esports Insider.
Over the past several years, many players have noticed changes in Fortnite that make it less appealing, including complicated seasons, maps that feel less creative, and collaborations that mostly involve TV shows or movies. By mid-2025, the average daily player count dropped below one million, marking the lowest point in about two years.
Despite these trends, some players still enjoy the game. CX Cummings shared mixed feelings about the current state of Fortnite.
“I don’t have as much time, and my friends don’t play it anymore,” said Cummings. “The more recent seasons suck, there’s too much going on, and the maps aren’t as creative.”
Analysts and players agree that simply changing the content isn’t enough to keep fans engaged. Life changes, responsibilities, and friends quitting the game have also contributed to lower playtime.
Connor Bartter, who started playing in 2019, explained why he has reduced his time in Fortnite.
“I play Fortnite less than I used to because I didn’t have as many responsibilities back then,” said Bartter. “The older seasons felt more creative, while the newer ones mostly feel like spin-offs of TV shows or movies.”
Ashton Hoke, a player since Season 2 in 2017-2018, said he mostly logs in during December for the OG season and has been spending more time on other games like Rocket League.
“I don’t know much about the recent seasons,” said Hoke. “I used to play six hours a day in my prime, but now I only play when the OG season drops.”
