With so many options for things to do around Columbus, many of the city’s best spots don’t always get the attention they deserve. While visitors often stick to major attractions, locals say the real appeal of the area comes from the lesser-known places that offer a more relaxed and unique experience.
Some of the most underrated locations are simple but memorable. The Park of Roses is one example, especially during peak bloom seasons when the scenery stands out.
“It’s very beautiful and unique,” said Ashton Hoke. “Most people miss it.”
Another commonly overlooked destination is North Market, where visitors can explore a variety of food vendors and local shops in one space. Students say it’s a convenient place to spend time with friends while trying new things.
“It’s cool to go with friends because you can buy unique things and just walk around,” said Carson Fritz.
For those looking for more high-energy activities, some students recommend Zoombezi Bay, a water park known for its slides and attractions. Located next to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, it gives visitors the option to experience two popular destinations in one trip.
“It is a lot of fun because of the water slides, and the zoo is right next to it,” said Will Gams.
Indoor options are also popular, especially during colder months. COSI continues to be a go-to destination for interactive exhibits and group outings.
“COSI is really good,” Fritz added.
Food remains a major part of the Columbus experience, and several restaurants consistently come up in conversation. Masa Mexican Grill is a frequent favorite among students, with many highlighting its quality and consistency.
“I’m friends with the owner, and the food is really great,” said Matt Lacher.
Newer spots like Chapala Mexican Grill are also gaining attention.
“It has good Mexican food,” Hoke said, adding that it is “relatively new.”
Even well-known chains like Chipotle Mexican Grill make the list, with some students claiming specific locations stand out.
“Bethel Chipotle because it’s the best Chipotle,” Lacher said.
Other casual dining options, such as Twin Peaks, are recognized for both food and atmosphere.
“It has very good burgers and 10/10 service,” said Gams.
When it comes to date ideas, many students point to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens as a reliable option, offering an environment that works year-round.
Students say the space provides a relaxed setting that makes conversation easy, which is why it is frequently recommended.
For more interactive outings, Westerville Golf Center offers a casual activity that can help people connect.
“It can really develop the bond between one another,” said Gams.
Entertainment venues like Star Lanes Polaris are also popular for group settings, combining bowling and arcade games in one place.
“It’s just fun to socialize,” Hoke said, while Gams noted that the crowd is “a mix of all kinds.”
Many students also spend time around Ohio State University, where there is consistently something happening both on and off campus.
“There’s lots of fun stuff to do down there, like hanging out with friends,” Lacher said.
Shopping centers like Polaris Fashion Place remain another common hangout spot.
“Window shopping is the best,” Lacher added.
Some locations, such as Metro Fitness, are described as hidden gems that more people are starting to discover.
“People don’t really know about it, but it’s one of the best gyms in the city,” said Gams.
While Columbus is often recognized for its major attractions, students say the city’s appeal goes beyond what is widely advertised. Many of the most enjoyable experiences come from exploring different places, spending time with friends, and finding new favorites along the way.
